Traveling home from Richmond KY we chose to freestyle and took the north route to Lexington via Interstate 75 toward Louisville then got irritated at the decision from shitty construction everywhere, then…we saw a sign for “WOODFORD RESERVE”…the American bourbon maker most people here in the states who are connoisseurs of spirits certainly know about. FanTASTIC lets go. so we wound our way through the countries grandest equestrian estates, along a 2 lane route that was full of massive rollling pastures and horses…horses everywhere. Everything shifted to excitment at something new to see, new dirt, new lands that were ALL KENTUCKY…our a freestyle adventure turned up gold. We got to the entrance the gate was not yet opened so we had 30 minutes to kill so we continued to drive around just looking at the sites and rolling geography, occasional massive barns and antebellum era long winding slave walls which were likely built by entire multi generational families working as slaves, working for their “masters” who were likely successful horse breeders and perhaps whiskey men. oh the bones. Noon hour hit we came back, drove through the gate and to our wonderful surprise this amazingly country chic style but modern and well appointed distillery was absolutely gorgeous and blooming out and in blossoming hydrangeas with crêpe myrtles and foliage staged to perfection for the surrounding environment. Even the The large stone pathway with its perfectly queued mortar pulled me in and directed me up into the house that you enter upon opening huge beautiful doors. We walked into the gift shop Mercantile and I was I was blown away at the gorgeousness of the modern feel that was totally grounded in stone glass steel fire in the running fireplace that set the show room with real style. We perused used all the tchotchkes, Was amazingly surprised at a gorgeous culinary section of syrups bitters oils all made from concoctions that had something to do with their bourbon we bought a few things and then we left there satisfied. Then… as freestyle roadtripping luck would have it I heard a group of women coming to the entrance from their vehicles as we were leaving and I overheard one of them say “at Buffalo trace we could walk all around“ ohhhhhhh my, really…? google…only 11 miles away…we were off…to the Famous BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY…
